CHAPTER 33

CLARA

I don’t usually call in the morning. Today I’m on the line before eight.

“Hi, how are you doing?” I ask.

“I’m muddling along. I stopped by the consumer co-op yesterday. Afterward I bought new windshield wipers for the car. And salt lick for the sheep. Spent money like there was no tomorrow. But I haven’t seen Bella for two days. That worries me.”

“I’m sure she’ll come home,” I say, and summon my strength. “But listen, Daddy . . . The police took Henrik in for questioning yesterday, and now it looks like they’re going to keep him there.”

“My God . . . What are you saying? Is this about the Ullevål murder?”

“Yes. And the murder at Lysebu. It’s just a misunderstanding, some kind of police error. I’m sure it will all be straightened out soon. But would you mind coming to stay with us? I’ll pay for your ticket, of course.”

There’s a moment of silence.

Daddy has always preferred to be in his own home.

Before his parents died and he had to take over the farm, he was at sea for a couple of years. By the time he took over the farm, most of his spirit of adventure, not to mention the chance to travel anywhere, had disappeared. Whatever might have remained of such a spirit had vanished during his six months in Lebanon.

Since then, apart from five or six nights spent in our house over the years, for christenings and such, he hasn’t slept anywhere but home at the farm.

“Yes,” he says. “Of course I will.”
